EvoMG will provide DCs with state-of-the-art network-wide training activities
First Summer School
The first Summer School, hosted by the CRG in Barcelona, introduces DCs to the foundations of evolutionary medicine. Participants receive practical training in evolutionary theory, genomics, and model systems used in ageing, cancer, and infectious diseases. Complementary sessions cover open science, FAIR data principles, and research integrity, while supporting the development of personal career plans to build responsible and strategic scientific careers.
First Winter School
The first Winter School, hosted by GIMM in Lisbon, focuses on building core analytical and transversal skills. DCs receive intensive training in comparative functional omics, including transcriptomics, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, and Hi-C, with a strong emphasis on cross-species analyses. Complementary sessions develop critical thinking, project management, and introduce the EvoMG peer mentorship programme, ensuring that participants strengthen both their scientific expertise and their capacity to design rigorous, ethical, and collaborative research.
Second Summer School
The second Summer School, hosted by FLI in Jena, strengthens DCs’ expertise in evolutionary medicine through a series of focused workshops. Training covers genetic diversity analysis to explore disease mechanisms, molecular evolution and phylogenetics for biomedical research, and advanced data visualization techniques to present results clearly and ethically. In addition, DCs receive intensive coaching in scientific writing and publishing, gaining the skills to effectively communicate their research within the scientific community and beyond.
Second Winter School
The second Winter School, hosted by the ICR in London, focuses on computational and communication skills at the interface of biology and medicine. DCs receive advanced training in mathematical modelling and machine learning, covering population genetics, evolutionary game theory, agent-based models, Bayesian inference, and deep generative approaches. Complementary sessions in science communication equip participants with tools to engage diverse audiences, culminating in a public Science Slam, where DCs present their research through impactful storytelling.
Third Summer School
The third Summer School, hosted by the CRG in Barcelona, takes the form of a Bio-Business School dedicated to innovation and entrepreneurship. Over four days, DCs work in teams to transform research ideas into viable business opportunities, applying tools such as lean start-up methodologies and the business model canvas. This hands-on training equips participants with practical skills in entrepreneurship, innovation management, and the translation of biomedical research into societal impact.
Final EvoMG Symposium
The Final EvoMG Symposium is an international scientific meeting fully organized by the DCs of the EvoMG-DN network. The event will showcase the research achievements of all DCs, complemented by invited talks and discussions on key topics in evolutionary medicine. Beyond presenting their work, DCs gain hands-on experience in event organization, leadership, and collaboration, as they take responsibility for all aspects of the symposium, from programme design and speaker invitations to fundraising, communication, and logistics. This final event serves both as a scientific highlight and as a training opportunity, strengthening the professional development and visibility of EvoMG researchers.
